07.11.2014  11:01

PRESS RELEASE

The European Union regrets that Lebanese citizens

will not be able to vote

The Delegation of the European Union issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Missions in Lebanon:

"Taking note of the decision of the Lebanese Parliament to extend its mandate for a maximum of two years and seven months, the European Union regrets that Lebanese citizens will not be able to exercise their right to vote, and that elections will be postponed once again.

The European Union calls on the Government of Lebanon and all political parties to make best use of the extension, to speedily advance on a new electoral law as well as on other pressing legislation.

The European Union remains committed to engaging with Government institutions as well as with civil society in order to implement adopted legislation.

In light of the particularly challenging circumstances Lebanon faces, the European Union urges all political stakeholders not to delay the election of a new President any longer and to hold parliamentary elections in the shortest timeframe possible."
